Association between biometric characteristics of tomato seeds and seedling growth and development Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Peñaloza,Patricia; Durán,José María.
Background The size and weight of tomato seeds depend on genetics and can be modified by environment and management. In some species, a strong relation has been described between physical aspects of the seeds and the quality of the corresponding seedlings, but this cannot be considered a general rule. The objective of this research was to identify any association between the biometric characteristics of tomato seeds and the growth and development of their seedlings. Results A total of 18 lots of hybrid tomato seeds were used (from indeterminate plants with round fruits), belonging to six varieties from two reproduction seasons. Each lot was evaluated for seed size and weight, and seed quality, in terms of the germination test (5 and 14 d after sowing). The...

Emergence and establishment of native and non-native species in soils of remnant and converted highland grasslands – southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Müller,Helena de Lima; Lopes,Rodrigo Ramos; Hermann,Julia-Maria.
Abstract Native grasslands in the Campos de Cima da Serra, Brazil, are being converted at speed for exotic tree plantations and cropland. The impact of modified and novel soil conditions on the establishment of native grassland species is unknown; establishment of non-native species, deliberately or accidentally introduced, could be favoured. In a common garden composed of fully randomized replicate samples of soils collected from remnant grassland, former cropland and pine plantations, we tested emergence and establishment of five cold-season species: Native low-tussock grass Piptochaetium montevidense (Spreng.) Parodi; native legume Trifolium riograndense Burkart; naturalized low-tussock grass Vulpia bromoides (L.) Gray; low-tussock grass Holcus lanatus...

Germination ecology of Rhynchosia capitata: an emerging summer weed in Asia Planta Daninha
Ali,H.H.; Tanveer,A.; Nadeem,M.A.; Asghar,H.N.; Javaid,M.M..
Rhynchosia capitata is becoming an increasing problem in summer crops, such as cotton, soybean, pearl millet and mungbean in many Asian countries. Laboratory and greenhouse studies have been conducted to determine the effects of several environmental factors on seed germination patterns and seedling emergence of R. capitata. We investigated whether the diverse ecological factors such as temperature, light, salinity, moisture stress, pH, and soil depth affected germination and seedling emergence of R. capitata. Germination increased as temperature increased from 25ºC and significantly reduced at 45ºC. Presence or absence of light did not influence germination. Germination of R. capitata was sensitive to increased salt and moisture stress, as well as to seed...

Heterosis and combining ability of seed physiological quality traits of single cross vs. three-way sorghum hybrids Agronomy
Galicia-Juárez, Marisol; Mendoza-Onofre, Leopoldo Ernesto; González-Hernández, Víctor Arturo; Cisneros-López, María Eugenia; Benítez-Riquelme, Ignacio; Córdova-Téllez, Leobigildo.
The aim of this research was to compare genetic parameters for traits related with seed germination and seedling vigour of single cross (SCH) vs. three-way (TWH) sorghum hybrids. The study was conducted in a sand bed under a greenhouse; 67 genotypes (four pairs of A- and B- lines, four R- lines, 13 SCH and 42 TWH) were allocated in a randomized complete blocks experimental design with three replications. Statistical analysis included ANOVA’s and Student “t” tests, while Tukey test (p £ 0.05) was applied for mean comparisons. The R-lines showed better physiological seed quality attributes than the A- and B- lines. The seed quality and heterosis values of SCH vs. that of TWH did not show significant differences (p > 0.05) for any variable; however,...

Influences of presowing treatments on the germination and emergence of fig seeds (Ficus carica L.) - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v34i3.13392 Agronomy
Çalişkan, Oguzhan; Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mustafa Kemal; Mavi, Kazim; Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mustafa Kemal; Polat, Aytekin; Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mustafa Kemal.
Seed germination of fig seeds is important for obtain seedlings with high variability in breeding studies, and for producing mosaic virus-free seedlings. This experiment was carried out to evaluated the effects of several treatments (priming with water for 24h, GA3 at 500 and 1000 ppm for 24h, 3% KNO3 for 24h, and stratification at 4°C for 7, 14 and 21 days) on seed germination and emergence of ‘Bursa Siyahı’ and ‘Sarılop’ fig cultivars. The application of GA3 increased the germination and emergence of these fig seeds. The highest percentages of germination and emergence were obtained with GA3 at 500 or 1000 ppm for both cultivars. The seed germination and emergence of the cultivar ‘Bursa Siyahı’ were higher than observed with the ‘Sarılop’. The...

Primed carrot seeds performance under water and temperature stress Scientia Agricola
Pereira,Márcio Dias; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos; Araújo,Eduardo Fontes.
Uniformity and percentage of seedling emergence of direct-seeded vegetables have a major impact on their yield and quality. Depending on temperature and soil water potential, carrot seeds performance in the field is poor justifying the use of techniques to accelerate the germination and seedling emergence. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of priming treatments, with and without aeration, on carrot seeds performance under water and temperature stress. Two seed lots of carrots, Brasília cultivar, were primed in PEG 6000 -1.0 and -1.2 MPa solutions, for four and eight days, at 20ºC, using two imbibition methods: priming in paper towel moistened with the respective solutions and immersion into aerated osmotic solutions. Non-primed seeds...

Seed bank composition in a secondary forest in the Lower Delta of the Paraná River (Argentina) Acta Botanica
Kalesnik,Fábio; Sirolli,Horacio; Collantes,Marta.
The native forests once occupying the coastal levees of the Lower Delta islands of the Paraná River (in Argentina) have been replaced by commercial forests. Many of those forests have been abandoned, resulting in secondary forest formation that is subject to numerous invasive exotic species. A priori observations suggest that successional trends do not lead to recovery of the original forest. The aim of the present study was to analyze the role of invasive exotic species in these environments and the likelihood of recovery of the original forest cover. Therefore, we examined the composition of the seed bank and of the standing vegetation, as well as the population structure of tree species. Secondary forests are described as being in an intermediate...

Seed priming and sulfur effects on soybean cell membrane stability and yield in saline soil PAB
Bejandi,Teymur Khandan; Sedghi,Mohammad; Sharifi,Raouf Seyed; Namvar,Ali; Molaei,Peyman.
The objective of this work was to determine the effects of seed priming and sulfur application on cell membrane characteristics, seedling emergence, chlorophyll content and grain yield of soybean (Glycine max) in saline soil. A complete-block design in 4x3 factorial arrangement with three replicates was used to test four types of seed priming (water, auxin, gibberellin and non-priming) and three levels of sulfate availability (0, 70 and 140 kg ha-1 K2SO4). The soil had a silty loam texture with an electrical conductivity of 3.61 ds m-1, a pH of 8.2 and a saturation percentage of about 46%. Seed priming had significant effects on mean emergence rate (MER), emergence percentage, relative water content (RWC) of leaves, relative chlorophyll content, time of...

The potential of natural regeneration of rocky outcrop vegetation on rupestrian field soils in "Serra do Cipó", Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Medina,Branca Maria Opazo; Fernandes,Geraldo Wilson.
An area's innate potential to regenerate represents a crucial factor for its conservation and management. The seed rain and seed bank are important agents in the regeneration process. Seed banks are particularly important in communities where there is a high proportion of obligate seeders. Rocky outcrops are habitats where most part of the plant species depends on their seeds to reproduce and maintain viable populations. Therefore, seed banks ought to be important in this vegetation physiognomy. We test the hypotheses that the seed bank of the rocky outcrops found in the rupestrian fields of "Serra do Cipó", Brazil, is richer in species and denser than those formed on different vegetation physiognomies neighboring the outcrops. We then compared species...

Vigor and field emergence in "high oleic" sunflower seeds, in southeast of Buenos Aires province Rev. bras. sementes
Murcia,Mónica; Peretti,Anna; San Martino,Silvina; Pérez,Alejandra; del Longo,Olga; Argüello,Juan; Pereyra,Victor.
Sunflower crop was based, as yet, on high linoleic cultivars, but in the last years request for oil with higher content of oleic acid has increased, due to their dietary characteristics. At the beginning, high oleic cultivars were used to be sown in warm regions, but then the concern about growing it in temperate areas, as the south-east of Buenos Aires Province, was posed. In this region, early sowings are recommended, so that grain filling matches with a period of appropriate hydric and light conditions, as to result in greater yields. However, early sowings are limited by low soil temperature, that delays seedling emergence, resulting in heterogeneous stand establishment. The aim of this work was to evaluate seed performance of four high oleic cultivars...
